When Christmas time is coming, there is so much to do. It can be hard to focus on your décor. If you are someone who likes to update your look each year, it’s difficult to know where to begin.
If you’re having trouble planning your decorating scheme, creating a guideline will take some of the stress off your hands. We have come up with some steps you can follow that will help you decorate…and not lose your mind in the process.
Decide on Color
As soon as the temperatures start to plummet, you can begin planning in your head by thinking about color. Obviously, red and green are traditional standbys, but it’s a good idea to change things up every once in a while.
Think about colors that are trending and go a little out of the box. Metallics are big this year and always make a vibrant holiday choice. Blues, purples and blacks add a hint of luxury while whites and pink are fun ways of capturing the childlike spirit of the season.
Decide on a Theme
Once you’ve figured out a color that works, it shouldn’t be hard to come up with a theme. Typically, the two go hand in hand.
So if you’ve decided on a deep jewel tone, you can for an opulent holiday look. A bright color will go well with something fun and light. Neutral tones make for a nature inspired look which is very much in line with today’s eco-friendly themes.
Once the season gets closer, you’ll want to bust out with your old ornaments. Go through them to figure out what fits your theme and color scheme. Take out the ones you plan on using and pack up the others for next year. That way you won’t feel so overwhelmed.
You also may want to add a few items to make sure your theme hits home. As a rule, it’s best to limit yourself in what you buy. You want to have enough to play with, but you don’t want so many decorations that you don’t know where to start.
Once you have all your decorations in front of you, it’s time to start. The first step may feel big, but once you start rolling, you’ll feel more confident. You’ll get those juices flowing and begin having fun with it.
However, it’s best not to do anything permanent at the beginning. If items need to be hammered or tacked, try placing them temporarily with tape before making any holes in the walls. That way, if you decide you want to move something, it won’t be a big deal.
Now that you know the steps to take, you are ready to plan your next décor scheme with confidence. Start with a color and theme, figure out what decorations you’re going to use and get to it! What are you thinking for this year’s holiday design?
